Berserkers, SAGA #3

Now then,

Its been a while, as ive been away, however my SAGA warband has gained a new unit, Berserkers!

These took only a few hours to paint up, very simple paint scheme, dip and matt varnish, done!

Next up will be the Levy archers, which may take a bit longer as there are 12 of them in the unit.

Cheers,

Steve

Bœndr. SAGA #2

Now then,

I finished off Viking unit 2 today!  These are the warriors, or bœndr (Individually they are called Bondi) as they are known.  less wealthy troops, generally reasonably well armed, and with a shield, they are a match for most other dark age troops, except the more elite or household types.

The first 4, I tried to keep the colours fairly muted and earthy, as only the wealthy could afford expensive dyes.

The other 4…Again, muted colours.

The full unit.  Ready to go pillaging!

I HAD to have a go at painting the eyes.  I think they came out OK.  So that’s the latest unit done, ive already started the next unit, Berserkers!!

(On an unrelated note, ive added a new page to the blog for my son James, so he can display his armies too!)

Cheers

Viking Hirdmen SAGA#1

Now then,

Ive finally started my Viking SAGA warband!!

The first unit done are the Hirdmen, the warlords trusted companions and bodyguards.  These are the best troops available to the Viking warlord, armoured in expensive chainmail and well armed.

These are Gripping Beast miniatures, and very nice they are too.  28mm isnt my thing at all, but these painted up really quickly using the army painter dip method, and ive found a good brush on matt varnish to get rid of the horrible glossyness too.

I might go back and paint the eyes……Hmmm maybe not!

Bondi (warriors) are next.

400pt Impetus Crusader army complete.

Now then,

Some pictures of my completed crusaders, all the figures are Legio Heroica 15mm.

And while i was at it, heres some of Saladins light troops, trying to oppose the crusaders crossing the dry river bed…..

So, all i need to do now is 2 more command stands, and a baggage/camp base.  Im really looking forward to one day actually getting a crusades game in, just a few more units of Arabs the ill have enough for a Basic impetus force, ill try and rope the kids into a game of that!

Anyway, Cheers

Knights Hospitaller

Now then,

Finally, ive got them done!  For some reason i just couldn’t motivate myself to paint these units.  Strange really, because these are the last “fighting” units for my Impetus Crusader army.

Hospitaller crossbows

Hospitaller foot sergeants

Knights Hospitaller

I have taken some liberties with the flags, call it artistic licence…..But i think they are close enough.

The Order of St John arrayed for battle.

I will post some pictures of the full 400pt Impetus army later, minus the “camp”.  The camp will be done soon, along with some command stands, so i can use the army for Hail Caesar as well as Impetus.

Cheers for looking

SAGA Dice.

There are lots of people talking about and playing SAGA at the moment, so i have jumped on the bandwagon.  Well, i got the rulebook for Christmas (even though i didnt actually get it till mid Feb….)

Now, to play the game you need special SAGA dice.  Fair enough i said….Until i saw the price of them.

Sorry, not happening, £12.00 for 8 dice, not in this lifetime!!  Anyway, i like the look of the game and still want to play it, so, with some help from Dalauppror, at http://dalauppror.blogspot.com/ i have made my own.

I got the dice from here -http://blankdice.co.uk/ At only 20p each.  The labels were downloaded from the gripping beast website - http://sd-2.archive-host.com/membres/up/13500292049611430/Symbole_saga.pdf, resized by Dalauppror, then emailed to me.  All i had to do was print them out and stick them on.  About £21.00 saved!!

Cheers

SAGA ,

Austrian Infantry division, 1809, Lasalle

Now then,

Following on from my last post, i have now finished painting all the core troops i need for an Austrian infantry division in the Empire period.

Some pics….

First up i have FML Hohenloe, the general of my army.

GM Riess, the brigade commander for IR44 – IR46.

The commanders are all labelled, the plan being to have a seperate sheet to record the commanders tactics and vigour ratings.

Finally i got round to painting up my artillery limbers.  I went for only 4 horse teams, just to cut down on storage space and painting time.

Sorry for the slightly blurry pic, but here is the full infantry division.

And the storage sytem im using.  This is a figures in comfort tray, and as you can see, the full division doesnt even fill it, the joys of using 6mm.  Inside a 21ltr “really useful box”  I can fit 5 of these trays, so i recon ill get all my planned Austrians and French, all in one box.

Next up is some Hospittaller crossbowmen (Really) They are all painted, just need the base finishing.

Cheers

IR33, Austrian Army 1809, Lasalle

Hi all,

I have painted up my latest regiment for the 6mm Lasalle project.  This time its IR33, a Hungarian infantry regiment.  The hungarian units wore blue trousers, and in 1809 probably wore shako’s but mine have the older style helmets.

The 1st Bn, denoted by the yellow flag.

The 2nd Bn.

Hungarian units were generally larger than the German ones, but ive chosen to only do 2 Battalions for mine.  I have another 4 Bn’s worthleft to paint, so will do another 2 regiments of 2 Bns each, just to break up the monotony of painting the same facing colours….

I have also painted up their commander in chief…….  I needed a subcommander to lead them, so used a spare command group and a mounted colonel.

Cheers for looking,

Steve

Austrian army list, Lasalle.

This is the army list i knocked up, for my Austrian army.  I cant for the life of me work out how to post a document to a blog, so i printed it out then scanned it as a picture……..

The army has the core list, with 3 support options.  I may, after i have some French, add another reserve option in the form of a Grenadier brigade.

I have tried to model it on the IV column at Aspern Essling, but with the addition of IR 51, and the cavalry, its not quite historical, but at least plausible.  All the units in the list were involved in the battle.

I will be doing something similar for the French forces.

Cheers

DBA Battle, Sparta vs Persia

Now then,

I managed to persuade my youngest son to give me a game of DBA tonight, he wanted Spartans, so i took control of the as yet un gamed with Persians.

The armies set up on one of my new gaming boards, from TSS.

Turn 1

Sparta – 6 pips.  The main Spartan phalanx advances in the centre, meanwhile the psiloi advance through the woods to harrass the Persian right flank, the Spartan reserve follows on behind.

Persia – 6 pips.  The light horse on the right flank quickly move to block the Spartan light troops in the woods, whilst the rest of the army moves forward in the centre.

Turn 2

Sparta – 3 pips.  The psiloi emerge from the safety of the woods and attack the light horsemen, only to be destroyed for their efforts.

The rest of the Spartan line advances.

Persian – 4 pips. The infantry advance in the centre, whilst the victorious light cavalry move to outflank the lumbering Spartan phalanx, and hopefully draw away his small reserve force.  Darius, in his chariot, moves forward.

Turn 3

Sparta – 5 pips.  The small Spartan cavalry force moves to attack the light horse threatening the Greek right flank, whilst the rest of the army advances toward the waiting Persians.

Persia – 4 pips.  The Persian cavalry and light horse attack the now isolated Spartan cavalry, only to be beaten off!!

On the other flank, the scythed chariot lines up to attack the flank of the approaching Spartan phalanx….

Turn 4

Sparta – 2 pips.  The reserve hopilites move toward the Persian light horse, whilst the Spartan cavalry attack the Persians, driving them back.

Persia – 5 pips.  The Persian cavalry regroup and charge the Spartan horsemen, and with some help from the light horsemen, kill them all!!  On the other flank, the scythed chariot thunders into the flank of the phalanx, destroying 2 stands…And itself of course…

Victory to the Persians!!  So the Spartan Commander, realising his forces are in a precarious position, retreats in good order, ready to fight again another day…..

Good game, and quick too, im sure young James will have his revenge, he normally wins…

Cheers for reading,

Steve
